For two consecutive days, November 11-12, hospital teachers, educational experts, friends, and partners of Superheroes School gathered in Kyiv to inspire and be inspired, discuss achievements, and plan future development, learn from colleagues, and share their own experiences.
This is already the fourth conference we have organized for the community of hospital teachers and the second offline event that brings together educators and their friends from all corners of Ukraine. Throughout all four years of the hospital teachers’ conference, we have been supported by the U.S. Embassy Kyiv Ukraine.
We founded Superheroes School in 2016 for the little ones of a single ward at the National Children Specialized Hospital “Okhmatdyt” of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Today, we take pride in how the School brings together amazing people working for the little superheroes. Currently, 17 educational centers of Superheroes School are operating in 13 cities, with plans to open 6 more next year. Despite the war, it is crucial to continue and expand educational opportunities for children in hospitals. Eight years ago, we were thinking about how to engage educators, and now the Superheroes School team includes 115 full-time employees and 124 subject teachers who carry out the vital mission every day—enabling young patients to continue their education, even while receiving treatment. In the first two months of the 2024/2025 academic year alone, more than 16,000 lessons have been conducted.
In a video message, First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska expressed her support for the educators, noting that such in-person professional meetings are especially valuable. She emphasized that teachers possess an extraordinary superpower, working with children who are fighting for their health and lives during wartime.
On the first day of the conference, hospital teachers participated in first aid training sessions supported by funding from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany. They gained essential skills in stopping critical bleeding and performing resuscitation to restore breathing.
The second day of the conference was incredibly productive!
During the panel discussions, participants shared their experiences and discussed the importance of continuous education for children undergoing treatment, as well as pressing issues related to improving access to and the quality of educational services. The discussions focused on: “Continuity of Education: Why Ensuring Learning for Children in Hospitals is Especially Crucial During War” and “The Teacher in a Hospital: Who Are They, How Should They Be Trained, and Can Their Example Inspire the Education System as a Whole?”.
In the thematic sessions, of which there were four this year:
- Education for the Youngest Superheroes: From Care to Learning
- Training for Educators on Media Literacy: “Media Literacy. Learn and Discern”
- Walking the Toughest Path Together: Providing Psychological Support in the School
- “State Tutor” Program: Overcoming Educational Gaps During Treatment
teachers and educators of the Superheroes School shared their own experiences and gained valuable insights from expert guests.
Thank you to everyone who joined the Conference of Hospital Teachers and made it so incredible and inspiring for each and every participant. We deeply appreciate your readiness to move forward, work, and grow for the sake of the children who need your support the most.
