We have opened the third grade of the Superheroes School for young patients in Okhmatdyt

26.03.21

On March 19, 2021 in the new building of block “C” National children’s hospital “Okhmatdyt” of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine together with partners we opened the third educational class of the Superheroes School in Okhmatdyt (across Ukraine the Superheroes School already operates in 7 children’s hospitals, that is 11 classes). Until the full launch of the new Okhmatdyt building, students from oncology departments will be able to study in this class, and after the launch of the building, which is scheduled for August 24, 2021, the class will work for all school-age children in this building. When creating the class, we were inspired by the experience of colleagues from Estonia, where teachers in hospitals teach in mini-groups of 4 children – such teams are comfortable for both children and teachers.

“When a child enters such class, he can redirects its attention. He tunes in to a positive mood, well-being and recovery. He is distracted from medical procedures” Yevhenia Smirnova told about the new class.

The first lesson in the class was conducted by our teacher of the Superheroes School, lawyer Olga Kulinich on the topic of copyright. Elementary students mastered the adult theme through a picture. This approach demonstrates that through creativity, children learn to understand complex concepts, including ideas and dreams.

From now on, in the new class you can organize classes in three forms – individual, group and distance, which is individually recommended by a doctor for each child. The class has high-speed Internet, TV, laptops for teachers and students, office and textbooks. We organized the bookshelves so that the child would fall in love with books and would love to read.

Tables and chairs can be easily moved around the room, considering children’s needs and the learning process. Students can sit where they are comfortable – at a desk or in a chair-bag, and there is a separate workplace for the teacher. There is also a hygiene corner in the classroom – a built-in washbasin where you can wash your hands and all the necessary antiseptics. The walls of the classroom are painted by the artist Angela Dmitrenko in a fairy-tale style: a castle, a forest, clouds – this design technique was chosen so that during the study the children would not feel the atmosphere of the hospital.

“I ask the government to look around and see the problem of funding and the need to open schools at hospitals. With this class, we want to inspire public figures, doctors, teachers, and civil servants to open such educational coworking spaces in all regions of the country. We need to think about children and the future – they will be grateful,” – said Natalia Moseychuk.

The opening was held in compliance with quarantine restrictions: in protective masks, with temperature control, a limited number of guests. Guests who came to open a brand new class – partners involved in its creation: the founder of the School of Superheroes Eugene Smirnova, curator of the School of Superheroes and social educational project Right to Education Natalia Moseichuk, Director General of National children’s hospital “Okhmatdyt” Volodymyr Zhovnire, representative of the project “International Women’s Club of Kyiv” Olena Zhydobin, representative of Cooper & Hunter, who donated a cooler, co-founder of Kompozit, who provided paints to create a class design, artist Angela Dmytrenko. And the furniture was made by Vladislav Konoval with love for children. And of course, without the support of the US Embassy’s Democracy Foundation in Ukraine, we would not be able to pay as much attention to the Superheroes School project. Thank you all, friends, for your support and creation of another educational space for toddlers!
